What is a tip, and how is it calculated?

A tip (also called a “gratuity”) is a sum of money that is paid directly to the employee who provided a service, usually as a percentage of the bill. The calculation is straightforward.

Tip amount = Bill amount × Tip percentage ÷ 100

Example: an 18% tip on a $60 bill = $60 × 0.18 = $10.80, making the total bill $70.80. That’s 23.60 for each person, when split 3 ways.

At restaurants/bars, a tip of about 15% to 20% is expected; good service is about 18% to 20%. Other services have norms that differ and are important to know:

Hair salons, barbers, massage parlors: about 10–20%.
Taxi, rideshare, or shuttle drivers: Taxis and rideshares are tipped about 15–20% of the time, while drivers of shuttles and parking attendants are tipped a flat rate of $1–3.

Do:

Don’t:
