How Do the Money Calculators Handle Rounding and Currency?

A slight change in the calculation can produce drastically different results, since money calculations depend on how taxes, interest, and rounding are applied. Let us understand how tools calculate them:- 

EMI: reducing balance method 

An EMI calculator usually uses the reducing balance method, by which interest is calculated on the given principal. The standard formula the tool uses to calculate EMI is:- 

EMI = P × r × ( 1 + r )ⁿ 

                         ( 1 + r )ⁿ – 1 

Where 

• P = principal 
• r = monthly interest rate 
• n = total number of monthly payments 

The output will provide an estimated result, as it may differ because of rounding, fees, rate changes, or specific loan terms. 

GST: inclusive vs exclusive 

The tax calculations depend on whether you entered the tax into the total amount or calculated it separately. 

When GST is added to the original amount, it is known as an exclusive one, for example:- 

If the price of a doll is ₹1000 and the GST rate is 18%, then the final amount will be ₹1180.

When GST is included in the original amount, it is known as inclusive, where you need to remove the tax from the base amount. 

Let’s take the final amount from the previous example, which is ₹1180, with 18% tax included; the tool then solves 1180 ÷ 1.18, which gives you ₹1000 with ₹180 as GST. 

Why “Discount Then Tax” Differs from “Tax Then Discount”

Changing the order of the calculation gives different results. Applying tax after the discount gives a result on the tax-excluded amount. Applying the discount to the tax-included amount will give you a different result than the previous case. Let’s understand this with an example:- 

Suppose an item costs ₹1,000, has a 10% discount, and is subject to 18% GST.

Discount first, then tax:

• Price after discount: ₹900
• GST (18%): ₹162
• Final amount: ₹1,062

If you apply the same with tax first, then discount, the result will be different.
